HELP…! Help me I’m being followed! Some days are good. Some days are bad. It seems that every day is the worst for the Queer community. Deadly attacks, deaths, seem to be the order of the day. Brutality, Brutality…! Its scary. Scary even to get out of your own bed, wondering if you will make it back. Nowhere is really safe. Its scary even to think about it. I just can not comprehend why there is so much hatred.
According to CORMSA, South Africa has no legislation covering crimes that are motivated by prejudice or that specifically target people on the basis of factors such as race, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion.
Following the brutal murder of Lindokuhle Cele was a very strong campaign #JusticeForLindo which also led to the arrest and prosecution of the murderer. The accused was sentenced to 25 year behind bars. Was this a fair judgement? I ask! Conversation for another day, I guess.
The court described it as a “Crime of revenge”. Mvuyisi Noguda stabbed Lindo 21 times across the face and left his weapon of choice in his eye. “It was a hateful and savage attack!” the judge said passing her sentence. I say, brutal! Activists have welcomed the sentence and we hope the family finds closure.
Meanwhile, with heavy hearts and sadness, we have received news on another brutal attack and the passing of Sphamandla Khoza in Umlazi, KZN. Sphamandla was brutally stabbed, his throat slit by a bunch of homophobes. “His crime was to live openly as a gay man.” Said one of his childhood friends on a Facebook post.
According to source, 2 suspects have been apprehended and are in custody and it is alleged that one has applied for bail. We will continue to follow this story. #JusticeForSphmandlaKhoza
